Barratt Homes, in partnership with Urban and Civic, has officially opened the doors to its Discovery House at its Wintringham development in St Neots.

Councillors of St Neots Town Council, including Town Mayor Councillor Rob Simonis, followed by a class at Wintringham Primary Academy, came to take the first tours around the Discovery House.

The interactive experience has been designed to show how new homes are built to save energy and be kinder to the planet, and help those who visit see what they can do in their own homes to live greener.

Councillor Rob Simonis, Town Mayor at St Neots Town Council, said: “It’s been great to better understand the consideration with which the development is being built, including how the team are aiming to raise awareness of important environmental issues, and how these are being addressed, with the next generation.

“The Discovery House is a fun, hands-on learning experience and is well worth a visit for both curious kids and also grown-ups who would like to know more about how this development is being approached.”

Those who visit the home will receive a workbook to complete which will help them consider and understand the sustainable features in the home.

The house features extensive wall displays explaining the construction process and the principles and practices that Barratt Homes follow in order to minimise the impact of development and provide homeowners with more energy efficient homes. There are also videos, games and cutaways that show inside the workings of the house.

Maxim Hall, Assistant Headteacher at Wintringham Primary Academy, said: “The children absolutely loved the Discovery House. They learnt loads about how a house is constructed and also, most importantly, they learnt many simple and effective ways to save their planet. We will definitely be bringing more classes to this unique experience after the summer holidays.”

The Discovery House is now open for anyone who is interested in learning about modern methods of construction or who might be looking to make their own home more sustainable.

The house also displays quotes from Barratt Homes’ Rising Stars, which conveys their feelings about working in construction and aims to inspire those considering a career in the homebuilding industry.

Simon Francis, Managing Director at Barratt Homes Northampton, “We are delighted to have welcomed St Neots Town Council and Wintringham Primary Academy to open our Discovery House. After many months in the making, this landmark property showcases everything we do to help make our homes greener and more environmentally friendly.

“It also provides lots of interesting features that will hopefully inspire people to take green issues into their own hands and even think about how they can be a part of building the sustainable homes of the future.”
