This was a clash between MK Dons v Coventry City. Graham Alexander was managing Milton Keynes Dons for the first time on home soil.
Initially MK Dons injected the first pain when Dawson Devoy was lunged to the ground. The referee had no alternative but to point to the penalty spot. Up stepped Jonathan Leko to guide it into the back of the net with ease.
This awoke Coventry and they were like a lion after their bate. The Sky Blues had a large percentage of possession throughout the whole thriller.
Coventry’s promising Gustavo Hamer delivered two attempts from distances and was unfortunate.
The first 45 minutes seemed like a yoyo effect. Every time MK Dons cleared a threat Coventry then regrouped and planned another mission.
The Sky Blues Ben Sheaf came close when he had a crack from 20 yards. As to did Josh Eccles when he endeavoured to conjure something up from a similar range.
Although with minutes remaining until the interval Coventry embarked on another surge. An unmarked Ellis Simms received the ball storming into the box. He nonchalantly poked it into the back of the net.
With MK Dons not having time to recuperate, Jake Bidwell hoofed a pass into the danger zone. Talisman Simms was there again to head home.
Coventry seemed eager to inflict more damage. They gave a scare when, stemming from a corner, Matty Godden latched onto it. His chance ricocheted off the post.
With MK Dons, 2-1 down, believing they could claw back the deficit had a brief spell. Coventry’s defence though were alert to any dangers.
MK Dons suffered more wounds in their armour when Eccles was awarded with an effort in a direct place, completing in style.
It was now a matter of how many more upsets Coventry could cause. MK Dons surrendered to a stronger force with skill and quality in abundance.
The travelling support were now in party mood. Kasey Palmer punctured the home side yet again when he unleashed a fierce shot from the left, making it 4-1.
Coventry’s passing and skill was exquisite and a joy to admire. But they are a Championship team narrowly missing out on, arguably, the crème-de-la-crème – the Premiership.
It finished at 5-1 as Coventry’s Bradley Stretton grabbed another.
Coventry manager Mark Robins told Coventry Live that, “I was pleased with the application and some of the play…it was a decent workout.”
