The 2023 Sex Map has returned, with Edinburgh ultimately coming out on top as the UK’s “Sexiest City”.

Looking at all the regions, cities, and counties in the UK, the Sex Map, by Lovehoney, analyses the nation’s sexual wellness spending habits, handing out awards and ranking the country based on its sexiness. Furthermore, the Sex Map includes some fun facts about relationships, sexual preferences and sex toy usage in the UK.

Top Ten Sexiest Cities

Ranked in terms of the most spent on sexual wellness products in relation to their population, the top 10 list is as follows:

Edinburgh

Belfast

Manchester

Cardiff

Liverpool

Bristol

Aberdeen

Glasgow

Sheffield

London

In the “Sexiest City”, Edinburgh, people spent the most money on sexual wellness products in 2022.

Yet, Liverpool was named the “Double Stimulation City” due to its penchant for rabbit vibrators, while Manchester was found to purchase the most bullet vibrators, earning it the title, “Small but Mighty City”.

Other honourable mentions go to the “Peachiest City”, Birmingham, thus named for buying more realistic butt toys than other city, and “Discreet” Glasgow, whose residents buy the most knicker vibrators.

Annabelle Knight, sex expert at Lovehoney, says: “The purpose of the Sex Map is to celebrate sexual liberation across our nation and encourage people to talk about sexual wellness products”, adding that, “it’s great to see such diversity in choice in different cities around the country.”

The Sex Map also features the ‘Sexual Pleasure Awards’ for different regions in the UK; Greater Manchester copped the “Best Dressed” award for buying more fetish clothing than anywhere else. The people of Kent, meanwhile, win the “Hardest Working” award, for the amount of Kegel balls they purchased – predominantly used to train and strengthen the pelvic floor muscle.

Broken down regionally, it was Wales that has the “Most Potential” – meaning that people here proportionally buy less sexual wellness items than in the other regions of the UK.

Compared with other countries, the UK buys the most products, while Australians buy the most clitoral suction vibrators, and Americans buy more butt plugs than anyone else.

The special Valentine’s edition of the Sex Map can be found here. It also features the brand’s expert pick of the top Sex Trends of 2023, interesting data from the 2022 global survey, and some surprising stats – for example, enough handcuffs were sold in the UK in 2022 (1.4m) to arrest the whole of Birmingham.

Lovehoney has launched a new range of iconic Rose Toys ahead of Valentine’s Day; anyone disappointed with their region’s performance in the Sex Map is advised to check it out.

Annabelle Knight added: “We have come such a long way in terms of how open we are talking about sex and pleasure in the UK, as shown in this year’s Sex Map. We still have a long way to go but the signs are very encouraging!”
