Team building to the extreme – Nottingham business mentor takes 48 businessowners to climb the UK’s 3 highest mountains in 36 hours to raise money for mental health charity MIND

Nottingham-based Business growth and leadership development expert Alasdair Cunningham helps entrepreneurs all over the world build and grow their business to over 6 figures while developing into effective speakers, facilitators and leaders. Now, after finding success in the business world, Alasdair is taking 48 of his students to complete the “Three Peaks Challenge” and climb the peaks of Snowden, Scafell Pike and Ben Nevis over a 36 hour period.

Alasdair, who aims to raise £10,000 for MIND by completing the challenge, explains that the mental health journeys of some of his students have inspired him to take on this massive undertaking.

“One of my students fled Iran as he couldn’t remain there safely and it took him 16 attempts to enter the UK. Once he was here, he found himself homeless and living rough around various cities. He faced what many would never be able to and managed to work himself to where he is now. After securing immigration status, he secured a loan to study and decided to invest in himself. This is where we met – he invested in his first property deal with just £30 in his bank account and since working with us he is now financially free, full time in property and studying for his PHD in aeronautical engineering. We have chosen to support MIND on this occasion because he and other clients have relied on their support in the past to help them through their dark times”

One student taking on the challenge with Alasdair, business owner Matt Williams, speaks on his own challenges dealing with mental health issues and why MIND is a cause close to him.

“The moment Alasdair told me about this challenge I knew I wanted to be involved. Personal development is a lifelong journey and challenging myself in this way will help to make me into a person people come to when their path isn’t clear. I’ve had my fair share of mental health struggles just like anyone else – but it always runs deeper than you think. For me, it ranges from debt, to relationship issues, to family suicides to physical abuse. The weight of these things can really affect the way you think and your overall identity, so I really want to raise this money to offer support to people who need it”.

Alasdair and his team are set to start their expedition on Monday, 4th September – taking a coach from Stoke train station to travel to Snowden and making the climb, when they will then travel to Scaffell Pike, then Ben Nevis for their final climb through the night.

“We’re all excited, but I think we’re also a bit scared about our ability – no one wants to let the team down in this ultimate test of tolerance and leadership. We’re all having regular coaching and fitness sessions to help build us up – bear in mind a fair few of us aren’t in the greatest shape for this, so as a team we’ll all have to get each other to those peaks. We’re expecting the Snowden climb to take five hours, then spend six hours on the Scaffell climb, before finishing with a lovely seven hour climb of Ben Nevis”.

Donations to MIND can be made through Alasdair’s JustGiving page.
