Nottingham knife attack inquiry is ‘really disappointing’ says mental health campaigner
A campaigner on mental health-related violence has described the Nottingham Inquiry into the three murders committed in 2023 by Valdo Calocane as “really disappointing”.
Julian Hendy told GB News: “It’s a really, really disappointing evening. I listened to the evidence today, and it’s just repeated failing after failing after failing. What do you say?
“Agencies that should have protected the public failed to do so. We had numerous considerable failings listed today.
“Calocane went on a series of violent and highly threatening attacks at students flats, and nothing effective was done.
“We heard today there was new evidence. He threatened to rape a neighbour’s child, a neighbour’s partner.
“He’d attacked a woman, he’s threatening to attack an Italian woman in a flat, and she was so worried that she had to jump out of her flat and ended up with very, very serious injuries.
“She broke her spine, and we understand that the police did nothing.
“They didn’t link the reports, they didn’t link the offences, and they claim they couldn’t do so because of data protection. That seems to be wrong.”
He added: “My dad was killed in 2007. There have been investigations going on since at least 1992 when Christopher Clunis killed Jonathan Zito in London, there were inquiries then.
“We hoped there was going to be change, but it didn’t really happen.
“I’m hoping that, for once, we get the proper scrutiny that needs to happen to make sure that these things as far as possible can’t happen again.”
