Research reveals that 90% of children are now spending more time outside since the first lockdown started, highlighting the increasing importance of outside spaces for mental wellbeing as well as for physical activity*. With this in mind, Barratt Homes has donated a selection of daffodils, tulips and other bright flower bulbs to Oakwood Primary Academy, located a few minutes’ walk away from the housebuilder’s Meadowburne Place development on St Martins Road in Eastbourne.

As bulb planting season began this autumn, the children have been busy potting their bulbs in their playground. Once acclimatised to the soil, the bulbs will go on to flower in spring 2022. The bulbs will provide a source of nectar, seeds and cover for the wildlife who live there, and will help to educate the children on the importance of protecting the local environment.

Kimberley Benson, Sales and Marketing Director for Barratt Southern Counties, comments: “As a sustainable housebuilder, we aim to help local school children learn how to provide habitats for local wildlife that are going to remain for many future generations when looked after. We are glad that the children enjoyed planting them and we hope they bring colour and encourage further wildlife to the school’s outdoor space in the forthcoming spring.”

Mrs Emma Taylor, Class Teacher Year 1, from Oakwood Primary Academy, comments: “We are really happy to have been involved in this hands-on project from Barratt Southern Counties and it has ensured the children are outside enjoying the fresh air and contributing to their playground. We all now have to be patient after the children’s hard work and look forward to seeing them bloom next year!”

Barratt Southern Counties has installed a range of wildlife friendly measures at its Meadowburne Place development, including a green space for residents and community allotments. All homes in the current phase are now sold out, with the next phase launching soon.
