Former teacher pioneers empowering care service for Exeter community

Local businesswoman Rosie Hydar is addressing the demand for affordable home care and support in Exeter and its surrounding areas. Recognising the lack of consistent and quality services, the mother of four has decided to take matters into her own hands. Her first-hand experiences in seeking support for her father and husband have inspired her to establish Hub Care Support – Exeter’s ethical, innovative solution for compassionate and quality home support.

“Unfortunately, my husband was diagnosed with Parkinson’s – a disease my dad had also battled – which led me to the care industry,” said Rosie. “I noticed that when we were finding care for my dad, there was a lack of consistency – not only did the person delivering the care change, but the time of his visits would be different every day. It meant my mum couldn’t leave him for long enough to run errands or have any semblance of a social life. It led me to think there must be a better alternative.”

Drawing on her career as a teacher, during which she travelled across Europe and Asia, Rosie, inspired by her experiences in seeking care for her father and husband, began contemplating the idea of opening her own care business.

“After teaching across the world, we decided to move back to the UK to be closer as a family,” explained Rosie. “With my experiences in education, I would say I’m a very caring and nurturing person, so the care industry was a natural fit. I’m still looking after someone’s important person, just at different stages of their lives. I was determined to provide a solution for the local community and Hub Care Support offers exactly that. People know what they want and when they want it, they just need a little help being heard.”

Hub Care Support ensures that service users benefit from a consistent and high-quality care experience by introducing them to a register of dedicated independent Personal Support Assistants (PAs). What sets Hub Care Support apart is the ability for service users to choose their PA from a carefully curated register, securing a perfect match for their individual needs. Rosie and her team take the time to speak with service users personally, understanding their situation and requirements – this consultation is completely free. All of Hub Care Support’s independent PAs are QCAS approved, having undergone full DBS checks, received full training, are insured and have the right to work in the UK.

“By moving to Exeter, I wanted to have a place where my family could all be together as before we’d had periods where we’d all been separated across different continents,” said Rosie. “One of my children was a student at Exeter University, so we knew it was a great place to put down roots – plus I’m from Penzance so the west country feels like home. As we’ve settled into the area, I’m particularly passionate about making a meaningful change in the lives of the people in our new community. Running my own business has always been a personal aspiration, and combining this dream with my passion for responding to the demand for consistent care in the area presents the perfect opportunity.”

Now, more than ever, Rosie’s service is meeting the demand for quality care in the local community, addressing a need that has recently become even more apparent. Determined to serve as many people in her local community as possible, Hub Care Support will extend its services to residents in Exmouth, Crediton, Tiverton, Newton Abbot, Ottery St. Mary and Exeter.

As Hub Care Support Exeter takes its first steps, Rosie has ambitious plans for the future: “We are now in the process of looking for clients. I’ve already got a team of independent PAs ready and waiting to go, with another group coming through in January. I really feel Hub Care Support affords me the opportunity to build a real sense of community and create valuable relationships between PAs and service users that really have a positive effect on people’s lives.

“Looking further down the line, I really want to create a hub for the community. My mum started to feel isolated when caring for my dad so having a place for people to go to be social is a real benefit and something I’m looking forward to.”
