Do weight loss jabs help or harm fertility? Experts weigh in
With new NHS guidelines now allowing GPs to prescribe weight loss injections like Mounjaro and Wegovy, questions remain around their impact on wider health, particularly fertility.
The new treatments, also known as GLP-1 agonists, have soared in popularity over the past 12 months, with many reaping the benefits of significant weight loss.
But for those trying to conceive, especially through IVF, the conversation around using weight loss jabs becomes more complex.
Why does weight matter in fertility?
Experts suggest that being overweight can reduce ovulation, egg quality, fertilisation rates and embryo quality. Obesity also increases pregnancy risks, such as preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, and stillbirth.
IVF specifically often requires higher medication doses in patients with a high BMI.
In short, a higher BMI can make conception more difficult, pregnancies riskier, and IVF less effective.
As such, if traditional weight loss methods aren’t working, those trying to conceive or undergoing IVF treatment could benefit from weight loss injections.
What do the experts say?
Dr Justin Chu, Medical Director at TFP Fertility Oxford, said: “For some patients, weight loss injections could be a helpful tool in improving fertility.
“We know a high BMI can negatively impact a number of factors when trying to conceive, so these jabs can offer a clinically supported option.
“However, it’s incredibly important that you consult a medical professional – and it’s vital to remember that weight loss jabs are not a miraculous quick fix for fertility.
“As these are relatively new drugs, we still don’t know a lot about how they can impact early pregnancy or embryo development, so it is crucial that patients err on the side of caution.
“That’s why it’s important, when undergoing IVF, to stop using injections at least two months before starting fertility treatment.”
