DID HEART PAY TOO MUCH FOR THE BLACK DIAMOND “ENIGMA”?

Mysterious black diamond sold for 4.3 million dollars

Antwerp, February 11, 2022 – Yesterday the mysterious “Enigma” was sold for 4.3 million dollars. A lot below the expected price of about 7 million dollars. Richard Heart, a crypto millionaire, is the lucky buyer. Why was there so much communication about this stone and did Heart score a gold deal or not?

An exceptional stone with an exceptional story
That the Enigma is an exceptional stone, there is no doubt. Stones of 555 carats are rare. Most diamonds go up to 5 carats. Large stones of several hundred carats are very exceptional.

The stone has been in the owner’s possession for more than 20 years. Where the stone comes from and how it was found, we know little or nothing about that. The story goes that this black diamond was created by a meteorite impact that caused enough pressure and heat to create this diamond. This is deduced from the fact that the stone contains osbornite, a substance found exclusively in meteorites. However, this is still scientifically debatable and cannot be verified for the time being.

Is black diamond exceptional?

Black diamond is actually a white diamond that has so many imperfections in it that it looks black. It is the imperfections in a stone that determine its color. Most diamonds are white and transparent. Colored diamonds (pink, blue,…) are very exceptional. Black diamonds are not as exceptional as colored diamonds. The size of this stone is quite exceptional though.

Does Heart have a golden deal on its hands?

Tom Neys – spokesperson AWDC: “For a very good quality black diamond, people will pay around 5,000 dollars per carat. But you also have stones of 200 dollars a carat. In the past, an exceptional blue stone cost 4 million euros per carat. So you are talking about a completely different category. If we look at the sum offered for the stone, Heart paid $8,000 per carat, not including auction fees. So that’s considerably more than what you would normally pay for black diamonds. Did he pay too much, then? You don’t buy a stone like this for the material, but for the story.”
