Revealed- The World’s Most Popular Board Games
A new study has revealed which board games are the most popular globally, with chess coming out on top.
Research by gaming experts SolitaireBliss studied the average number of times a month the 62 biggest selling board games are Googled to determine which ten are the most popular.
The study concluded that the classic strategy game is the most popular, with an average of four million searches a month. Chess, as we know it today, originated in the 15th century, evolving from a similar game of Indian origin, and is now played by millions across the world.
The second most popular game is Uno, with an average of 1.7 million searches a month. The card game was first released in 1992, and its popularity has resulted in several special games and spin-off versions such as Uno Minecraft.
Monopoly is in third place with 1.4 million average searches a month. The game was first released in the United States in 1935 and has since become popular all over the world. The original Monopoly board was based on Atlantic City, New Jersey, and there are now versions based on a range of different cities and even some based on TV series and films.
Next is word game Scrabble, which is searched on average 1.1 million times a month. The game was first released in the US in 1938 and is now available in over 120 countries in more than 30 languages. Its popularity has spawned approximately 4,000 Scrabble clubs across the world.
In fifth place is Checkers. The game has been played for at least 5,000 years and is searched on average 924,000 times a month. Its simple gameplay and easy setup mean that it is very popular, even thousands of years after its inception.
