A Site Manager at one of David Wilson Homes’ developments in Nottinghamshire has attended a local school to give its younger pupils an insight into construction careers and site safety.

Dane McMurtry, who oversees the construction at Hunters Place in Fernwood, visited Chuter Ede Primary School and provided a presentation to get its Foundation pupils thinking about careers in housebuilding and general site safety.

The talk at the school provided an insight into Dane’s career path, how he became a Site Manager and what his day-to-day tasks entail. It also encouraged engagement from the four- and five-year-olds, as they learned more about site safety and watched a video to highlight the hazards on a building site.

Sam Whiles, Foundation Class Teacher at Chuter Ede Primary School, said: “It was a great experience for the children to have an insight into the construction of the houses which they see each day. Dane delivered a great presentation which the children thoroughly enjoyed!”

With the school located on the wider Fernwood Village development, it was an opportunity for Dane to make sure the pupils are aware of the potential dangers of playing near a live development, especially during the summer holidays.

The pupils were able to learn more about the signs to look out for that alert people to hazards, the hi-vis PPE that those who enter the site must wear, and why it’s important to stay clear of the development unless accompanied by someone who works there.

Rachael Harrison, Sales Director at David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said: “We’re grateful for Dane spending the time to visit Chuter Ede Primary School to not only provide an excellent insight into site safety, but to encourage the pupils to think about careers in construction from an early age.

“We heard great feedback about the enthusiasm of the pupils during Dane’s presentation, and we hope they were able to take away some useful information from the talk.”

Hunters Place currently has a selection of two, three and four bedroom properties in a desirable setting, which features leafy streets, quiet cul-de-sacs and plenty of public open space.
