31% have missed their children’s school events because they couldn’t get time off

In the run-up to World Kindness Day on Monday 13th November, Digital ID’s identification expert Adam Bennett provides simple advice on creative employee appreciation methods.

Digital ID reveals some funny yet worrying search data that shows that in the UK alone, there are on average 12,000 searches for ‘sick day excuses’

Digital ID also ran a survey across 2,000 UK employees and found that:

43% of employees say that incentives and flexibility have dropped since workers return to the workplace, and DON’T feel appreciated.

31% have missed their children’s school events because they couldn’t get time off.

“In light of the tough economic climate, we’re seeing the toll it takes on mental health across the workforce,” Adam Bennett from Digital ID reflects. “Now more than ever, companies need to pivot towards nurturing their employees’ well-being through thoughtful and considerate appreciation.

“Appreciating employees extends beyond the tangibles,” Adam Bennett from Digital ID’s declares. “Flexibility in work schedules is one of the highest forms of respect a company can offer its workforce.”

Below we’ve put together a list of incentives that will add that extra touch of gratitude to your employers.

Bespoke gift cards

Adam Bennett recommends the strategic use of gift cards as a means of providing personal and flexible appreciation. “Selecting a gift card that aligns with an employee’s interests shows thoughtfulness and encourages personal choice,” explains Bennett.

Planning annual retreats

Bennett suggests that companies invest in annual retreats, carefully crafted to balance leisure with professional development. “Retreats are more than a getaway; they’re a crucible for forging strong team dynamics and demonstrating a company’s investment in its people.”

Celebrating milestones and birthdays

Recognising employee milestones with in-office celebrations or personalised acknowledgements can greatly enhance the sense of belonging. He highlights, “Acknowledging personal achievements like work anniversaries or significant project completions reinforces the value placed on each team member.”

Social media recognition

Utilising company social platforms to celebrate team and individual achievements affirms a company’s pride in its staff. “It’s about creating heroes in our midst and showing the world the calibre of talent we nurture,” He comments.

Adaptable working schedules

Bennett stresses the importance of flexible working schedules as a form of employee appreciation. “In today’s fast-paced world, providing employees with adaptable working arrangements is paramount. It shows respect for their time and a trust in their work ethic that can inspire loyalty and increase productivity.”

Time off for school events

Recognise the importance of family and encourage bosses to allow parents time off to attend their children’s school events, such as nativities and plays. “Providing time for parents to participate in their children’s key moments is an investment in the family well-being of our employees,” says Adam Bennett.

Eating well

Underlining the connection between nutrition and well-being, Adam Bennett advocates offering paid lunch and breakfast options. “Ensuring our teams eat well is a priority. Providing healthy meal options can be a cornerstone of a productive and happy workplace,” Bennett suggests.

“These strategies can greatly enhance job satisfaction and can be a cornerstone for a company’s success,”

He elucidates. “Simple yet thoughtful appreciation can resonate deeply with employees, spurring commitment and productivity.”

Good old-fashioned thank you

Adam Bennett advises that regular, simple expressions of gratitude can be as impactful as grand gestures. “Whether it’s a handwritten note, a public mention in a meeting, or a surprise lunch, these acts of kindness can boost morale significantly.”

Alongside these strategies, Bennett also underscores the role of a tidy and efficient work setting in showing respect for staff, which is also reflective of the company’s commitment to sustainable and responsible business practices.
