WORLD’S FIRST All Disabled Team To Cross Europe’s Largest Ice Cap
On April 14th 2023, Ed Jackson, Darren Edwards and Dr Niall McCann set off on an unsupported 136 kilometre traverse of the largest ice cap in Western Europe, Iceland’s Vatnajökull Ice Cap. In just 11 days, the three men completed their journey and have now become the world’s first all-disabled team to make the crossing.
The team had close calls with both weather and their own medical challenges during the expedition. They battled everything from driving rain to 100kph winds and temperatures of -27 degrees C. It has been a huge test for all of them and only possible by working together to overcome their individual trials during each day.
With an estimated 50,000 people in the UK living with a spinal cord injury (Spinal Injuries Association), the group aims to raise funds for Millimetres 2 Mountains (M2M), the UK-based charity dedicated to creating positive change for people recovering from physical or psychological trauma..
