TV Doctor Amir Khan honoured by home-town University

TV Doctor Amir Khan, known for his health tips on shows such as Lorraine, This Morning and Good Morning Britain has been awarded a prestigious honorary doctorate from his home-town university in Bradford.

The University of Bradford, where he also teaches the next generation of medical professionals, welcomed him back on to campus this week to receive his award. “It’s really special to be part of these graduations, I teach them, they come to me on placement where I hopefully give them a passion for primary care, and the next time I see them is when they’re working, as a colleague, so to see this part of their journey is really nice”

Amir, who has recently been named as patron of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society is also passionate about wildlife, regularly posting pictures of the spiky visitors to his garden on his social media. With the University of Bradford being an official Hedgehog Friendly Campus, he is keen to promote the health benefits of nature: “It’s great to see the links with education, health and nature, they’re all interlinked”

Love Island fan Amir themed his advice to students around the hit TV show, though admitted he wouldn’t be talking about it if his mum was in the audience as she thinks it’s “pure filth!”
“Think of opportunities like Love Island – what boxes do those opportunities tick? Graft hard, make it breakfast, whatever it takes to impress…then take a seat while your hard work is recognised”

The University welcomed over 3,000 students back onto campus for their graduations, with students from 2020 and 2021 who were unable to take part in in-person ceremonies due to covid lockdowns also receiving their awards.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Shirley Congden said: “We are proud of all our students, of the journeys they are on, and of their potential to make a real difference in the world. We are proud to have been able to provide them with some special moments they can cherish and share with loved ones, and that they each had their moment to shine, and be proud of what they have achieved.”
