Many celebrities use social media to connect with their fans. However, in the cancel culture era, some famous figures are losing followers in the thousands due to their behaviour.

From actors to singers to social media stars, the rise and fall of Hollywood’s rich and famous can be documented by their social media followers.

With that being said, the team at I Love Seo has revealed which celebrities have been losing Instagram followers over the last month. The team compared Instagram followings from early June to early July to discover a selection of celebs who are seeing their numbers dwindle.

Taking the top spot as the celebrity losing the most Instagram followers is American actor Will Smith, who lost over 250,000 followers in 30 days, or 8,537 a day. Smith has a career spanning over three decades, rising into popularity by starring in the 90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and remaining popular ever since. However, in March 2022 Smith hit the headlines at the 94th Academy Awards when he assaulted actor Chris Rock on stage after Rock made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Whilst the actors following increased in the immediate aftermath on the incident, his following has since been in decline, with thousands of Instagram users choosing to unfollow the star in the last month.

Social media personality James Charles is another celebrity who has seen a hit to their Instagram following. Charles lost over 60,000 followers from June to July, or 2,803 followers a day. Charles rose to fame when he began his YouTube channel in 2015, and one year later became the first male ambassador for cosmetics brand CoverGirl. By 2019, he had over 10 million followers on YouTube. However, the beauty guru has been losing thousands of followers every month in recent times due to online feuds with other social media personalities and a string of sexual harassment cases, prompting plenty of users to unfollow the star.

Model Cara Delevingne also saw her followers diminish in the thousands from June to July. The English model has appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine 15 times throughout her career and has even made the switch to acting, appearing in Hollywood blockbusters Suicide Squad and Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets. However, the model lost 58,170 Instagram followers from June to July, or 1,939 a day.

American gymnast Simone Biles is another celebrity who has seen her Instagram following decrease. Biles, who has seven Olympic medals for Team USA, lost 29,100 followers from June to July, or 970 a day. English football player Mason Greenwood is another athlete who saw a hit to his following as he lost 23,430 followers.

Also on the list are British singers Rita Ora, who lost 22,260 followers, Cheryl, who lost 5,760, and Jess Glynne, who lost 3,660.

Social media personality Olivia Jade Giannulli lost 8,610 followers. Giannulli is the daughter of American actress Lori Loughlin, who was sentenced to two months in prison for the highly publicized entrance exam scandal in 2020. Another social media personality who lost followers is Morgan Simianer, star of the hit Netflix show Cheer lost 6,120 followers.

Commenting on the figures, a spokesperson from I Love Seo said: “Celebrities are scrutinised for everything they do, and sometimes this can have a devasting impact on their online presence.

“As easy as it is for a celebrity to grow their following, it can be just as easy for them to lose followers. Many social media users follow people they admire and respect, and if a celebrity’s reputation gets damaged, it can result in a loss of followers, which is sometimes difficult to grow back.”
