The next book in the Gaspard the Fox series continues the story of London’s handsomest fox with a musical twist

Gaspard’s Foxtrot is the latest instalment in the charming Gaspard the Fox picture book series, inspired by a real-life urban fox who visits the author, Zeb Soanes, at his home in London.

In this latest adventure, Gaspard’s friend Finty the dog and her owner, Honey, are travelling to a classical concert in London’s Hyde Park – if only Gaspard could join them! But while good-naturedly attempting to return Honey’s scarf, the handsomest fox in London suddenly finds himself on a tour through the city’s streets aboard Finty’s bus, passing some of London’s best sight-seeing spots, such as Islington Green, Museum Street, Chinatown, the theatres of the West End, Piccadilly and many more. His search for Finty and Honey sees Gaspard thrust to centre stage as he becomes a musical inspiration.

Featuring text from Gaspard’s Foxtrot, an orchestral adaptation by Jonathan Dove will tour the UK in 2021, subject to government restrictions. Featuring live illustration by James Mayhew, narration by Zeb Soanes and music by a range of professional orchestras, including the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Docklands Sinfonia, the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, performances will take place in various locations across the UK.

Zeb Soanes says: ‘Usually I only have to write with my eyes, thinking about images that would inspire James, but this time I was writing with my eyes and ears to conjure both rich images for James and a soundscape for Jonathan to compose. It has been the most satisfying creative process. Nearly two years
on from that first conversation with Jonathan, both story and music are written and James is busy on the illustrations before publication next year.’

James Mayhew adds: ‘The third Gaspard book features an adventure with an orchestra and was written with a possible music adaptation in mind. We are extremely fortunate that the extraordinary Jonathan Dove took on the commission. We are hoping to be able to go ahead with a tour around the country with the commissioning orchestras, including the Philharmonia at London’s Southbank, the Royal National Scottish Orchestra, and Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. It’s quite a big adventure!’
