The future of liposuction: can we be ‘bioresponsible’ with our unwanted fat?

cosmetic treatment

According to the Cadogan Clinic, liposuction is one of the five most common cosmetic surgery procedures in the UK, accounting for roughly 10% of all cosmetic procedures in 2019 alone. While the use and reasoning for liposuction varies, it is fundamentally used to remove unwanted fat from specific areas of the body that are less responsive to a healthy diet or exercise.
Although liposuction dates back to the 1920s, the advancements within the industry during the last decade has opened up a plethora of new uses after the surgery has been administered. Uvence – a naturally based cosmetic treatment that uses one’s own cells to rejuvenate the skin – uses a patient’s purified and unwanted fat to improve skin texture and overall appearance. The treatment requires the extraction of cells through mini or micro liposuction, and so for patients who are already having a liposuction surgery performed can make use of the excess fat for future rejuvenation if they wish.

Dr Olivier Amar, leading cosmetic surgeon and CMO of Uvence, discusses how our fat can be used for regeneration beyond extraction:

“Liposuction has been a popular surgery in the cosmetic arena for some time now. However, what many patients are unaware of is that there are multiple uses for our fat once it has been extracted. I am a huge advocate of using your own body tissues to regenerate your face, as our own fat tissue offers a variety of wonderful uses once it has been extracted from unwanted areas.

With this in mind, Uvence was launched as an innovative approach to cosmetic treatments, presenting a major breakthrough for the cosmetic treatment industry as the treatment eliminates the need for synthetic substances, instead focusing on the rejuvenation powers of our own bodies. Uvence uses a patient’s own purified cells to rejuvenate the skin. This offering allows access to regenerative and personalised treatments and is the biggest advance in the field for nearly 15 years.

In terms of accessibility and convenience this has never been seen before – the treatment can be carried out within 30 minutes with no recovery time, and the cryopreservation capability allows plastic and cosmetic surgeons alike to provide this treatment on a consistent basis to their patients without the need for further liposuction or tissue extraction. I am incredibly excited to be part of this innovative approach to beauty, and I believe that the industry is set to see more growth over the coming years.”
