Planet7 has analysed YouTube, IMDb and Reddit to discover the most hyped movies, actors and directors in the last five years. With this data we have also uncovered the biggest cinema hits and misses.

How did we work this out?

We crawled and analysed thousands Reddit posts in r/movies in order to determine which trailers had the highest combination of comments, upvotes, awards. We also looked at IMDb and YouTube metrics, including likes, comments and views, and used the resulting data to create a Hype Score for the biggest movie trailers posted in the last five years.

In order to understand how it’s hype fared upon release, we took a Release Score using Metacritic data, and subsequently compared the two to determine which movies are the most over-hyped and which outperformed expectations.
