Research by the pioneers of personalised, organic period care delivered through your letterbox, Yoppie, has looked at the main causes of PMS, what the most common symptoms are, and what you can do to tackle it.

What is PMS?

PMS stands for premenstrual syndrome, and affects a women’s physical body, emotions and behaviours. Most commonly, women can experience sadness, irritability, anxiousness, tiredness, anger, unexplained crying, fatigue and headaches.

As many as three out of every four women will suffer from some degree of PMS and while its impact can be predictable, the extent of this impact can vary drastically from one woman to the next and can even have an impact on mental health.

Symptoms

PMS is really an umbrella term that covers as many as 100 different symptoms experienced during the luteal phase and so many of us might not even realise we’re suffering from PMS.

Some of the most common symptoms include feelings of upset, depression, anxiety, tension or irritation. It can also cause tiredness or insomnia, while more physically obvious symptoms include bloating, stomach aches, sore boobs and headaches. It can also cause skin breakouts, greasy hair and even impact our appetite and concentration.

Causes

The biggest pain with PMS is that there are no real known causes. While it’s more prevalent in women under 35, age is an unreliable predictor but PMS symptoms are often more severe for pregnant women and those who do not take oral contraception. As well as women under heightened levels of stress.

However, we do know that PMS can be brought on by cyclical hormone fluctuation caused by the menstrual cycle and chemical changes in the brain, including changes to our serotonin levels.

How to help it

Much like there is no one cause of PMS, there is also no one size fits all cure and treatments can range from a chocolate bar to a hysterectomy in the most serious cases.

That said, there are a few things you can do to help fight PMS.

It’s proven that lifestyle can have a big impact and exercise, a healthy balanced diet and plenty of sleep can help reduce PMS symptoms, while stress, smoking and too much alcohol can cause them to increase.

While there are no quick fixes available such as antibiotics, you can help fight PMS through the prolonged use of supplements to increase various nutrients in the body.

It’s been proven that Calcium, Magnesium, Chasteberry, Primrose Oil and Vitamins B6, B12, D and E can all help reduce PMS, but with 40% of us already taking daily supplements, what should we take and what’s safe?

Yoppie has done the hard work for you, with the highly anticipated launch of three symptom-targeted PMS supplements this month, in the belief that women deserve more than the “generic one-size-fits-all female multivitamin” to help alleviate their PMS symptoms.

Yoppie wanted to take the complexity and stress out of tackling PMS, so they created three specific supplements that effectively target the most common symptoms women experience:

Mood Food: the supplement that helps alleviate the emotional symptoms of PMS: mood swings, irritability and anxious feelings.

Super Soother: the supplement that helps alleviate the physical symptoms of PMS: cramps, headaches and breast tenderness.

Hormone Hero: the supplement that helps alleviate the hormonal symptoms of PMS: bloating, digestive issues and fatigue.

Each supplement comes in three different sizes (21, 28 or 35 days) to allow women to sync their supplement intake to their cycle and can be safely taken together if needed, or alongside other supplements. They can also be combined with other PMS attack plans such as exercise routines and self-care to help boost PMS relief.

What’s more, just like Yoppie’s organic period care products, they can be delivered through your letterbox on a subscription basis so you never have to worry about running out just when you need them most, plus it makes creating the habit of supplement intake a whole lot easier.

Founder of Yoppie, Daniella Peri, commented:

“As if periods aren’t taboo enough, PMS can cause an even greater level of discomfort and embarrassment to the vast majority of women. But just like our periods, PMS symptoms and their severity differ drastically from one woman to the next. So there is no one remedy that can fight PMS – the generic supplements designed for “the masses” that are currently on the market are just not enough. Women deserve more personalisation and effective relief to help alleviate their individual symptoms

Amongst all the hot water bottles, pain-relief, exercise routines and gadgets galore – managing periods and PMS has become complicated. On top of it all, just the basics of getting the right nutrients throughout your cycle isn’t easy.

We believe you deserve more than a “one-size-fits-all female multivitamin designed for the masses” to help tackle your individual symptoms of PMS – so, we created three custom supplements that will.

Whether it’s bloating, cramps, mood swings, or a blend of all three, our supplements help target each symptom to give you the best individual results throughout your cycle.

What we do know is that lifestyle changes can make a big difference, especially when coupled with the right nutrients. Of course, diet comes first, but it’s a known fact that the majority of us fall short on key nutrients through diet alone. That’s why we decided to create a range of supplements that help women meet their nutrient goals, but also specifically targeted to the most common symptoms of PMS.

Plenty of women already use supplements in their daily lives and 40% of us prefer natural remedies over conventional pain relief medicine. However, we wanted to take the headache out of researching which supplement helps with what and the hours spent in the pharmacy aisle looking at vitamin labels, so we designed Hormone Hero, Mood Food and Super Soother supplements to help women create uncomplicated and truly personal PMS solutions.”
