An online food retailer has launched a £16.99 steak into space ahead of Cyber Week.

MuscleFood sent the 500g T-Bone up into orbit from its launch pad in Sheffield, with the steak travelling 60 miles and landing in the Lincolnshire Wolds 60 minutes later.

The steak travelled across the peaks of South Yorkshire and across the flat Lincolnshire landscape before reaching its final destination.

The retailer launched the meaty feast into space to mark a week of tasty, meaty savings on steaks that are quite literally out of this world from Cyber Monday.

MuscleFood’s Black Friday deals are now live with new deals coming in each week before their Cyber Week offers begin.

It was carried out by Sheffield based SentIntoSpace who have previous experience of sending many different products and other items into space.

The once in a lifetime mission saw the steak being lifted into the air by a balloon filled with hydrogen – the lightest element.

On the ground, the balloon was slightly larger than a person but by the time it reached its maximum height, it was as tall as Buckingham Palace.

During its journey to space the balloon reached a peak altitude of around 31-33km in an hour and a half before descending.

After reaching its peak altitude, the steak dropped at around 200mph, its parachute deployed and the steak fell slowly back down to earth, making its total travel time two and a half hours.

This is believed to be the first time a steak has been sent into space by a commercial company.

The T-bone steak sent into space will be part of MuscleFood’s Cyber Week offers.

Dale Wright from MuscleFood.com said: “We wanted to mark the launch of Cyber Week with something out of this world – and what can be more out of this world than sending a steak to space.

“It’s a once in a lifetime mission for us – and the T-Bone steak. The steak started its journey in Sheffield and landed in the Lincolnshire Wolds. It took around an hour for it to reach its maximum altitude, after that, the parachute opened up and the steak started its journey back down to earth.

“When the steak initially began its landing it was moving at a very speedy 200 miles per hour for around five minutes before the parachute opened. By the time it hit land, it was travelling at just five miles per hour.

“The footage from the flight is incredible – you get a glimpse into the whole flight right from the exciting take off in Sheffield all the way through until the steaks journey up to its maximum altitude as well as its landing!”
