Spotify study reveals Skyrim is the most popular video game soundtrack

Video game soundtracks are no longer limited to 8-bit chiptunes like the Super Marios of old, with many games of the last decade featuring epic scores comparable to epic movie scores. In recent years, game developers have even utilised popular singers to help boost their popularity, with one of the most well-known collaborations being Riot Games using ‘Warriors’ by Imagine Dragons to promote their 2014 League of Legends World Championships.

Spurred on by the Tokyo Olympic Games featuring video game music in their opening ceremony, RantCasino.com were interested in finding out which video game soundtracks were the most streamed around the world.

After collating a list of the most loved video game soundtracks, the team utilised Spotify to tally  the number of streams per soundtrack, ultimately allowing them to rank the most popular soundtrack based on its total number of Spotify streams.

RantCasino.com can reveal that the most popular video soundtrack of all time, according to Spotify streams, is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim: Original Game Soundtrack. Skyrim’s main theme was recorded with a 30-man choir in dragon-tongue and has a grand total of 316,387,843 Spotify streams.

Ranking second is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt with 304,138,799 Spotify streams. The soundtrack includes folk music mixed with battle hymns, and was even nominated for best soundtrack in a video game at the 2015 Hollywood Music Media awards.

The Last of Us is third with 178,351,897 Spotify streams. The game was released on June 14th 2013, and has been dubbed one of the most revolutionary and most memorable games of all time. 

Ranking fourth is League of Legends (81,677,962), fifth is Ori and the Blind Forest (80,858,446), sixth is PlayStation exclusive God of War (74,184,832), and seventh is Crypt of the Necrodancer (71,048,161 total streams).

Rounding off the top 10, in eighth place, is Mass Effect 3, with a total of 66,226,018 album streams on Spotify.

In ninth place is Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, which boasts 58,723,737 total streams. This game subsequently released two more soundtracks, featuring the haunting sea shanties that often appeared in the background of scenes.

Finally, in 10th place, is the soundtrack for Assassin’s Creed II, with a total of 55,817,446 streams on Spotify. Composed by Jasper Kyd, players who pre-ordered the Black Edition of Assassin’s Creed II received a bonus DVD containing a 14-tracks soundtrack, trailers, and wallpapers.
