Short film released; IPSO uphold fewer than 3% of complaints of press intrusion into grief
Victims of press intrusion speak out in Hacked Off’s powerful new film released today
Hacked Off research reveals IPSO uphold fewer than 3% of complaints of press intrusion into grief
A 15 minute film created by Hacked Off, The Press and The People, will be released at 7pm today (Tuesday July 12th). The short documentary film features three cases of press intrusion after bereavement. Each of these cases occurred in the last few years.
IPSO did not uphold complaints in respect of any of the three cases featured.
The film will be released at 19:00 this evening. It can be watched at 7pm here.
Copies are available to view in advance on request.
As the film is being released, Hacked Off are publishing exclusive research which has found that of 257 Intrusion into Grief complaints ever processed by IPSO (Clause 4 of the Editors’ Code), only 7 have been upheld. This represents fewer than 3%.
Hacked Off Chief Executive Nathan Sparkes said,
“Our powerful new film, The Press and The People, exposes press abuse at its most severe: reporters harassing, bullying and intruding on families at a time of unimaginable suffering, just to sell more newspapers.
It is no surprise to find that IPSO has upheld fewer than 3% of complaints of press intrusion into grief in its history, given how close the complaints-handler is to the newspaper industry it claims to regulate.
“Hundreds of individuals and families have been let down by the sham regulator after facing press abuse.
“Our film shows the impact of the absence of effective press regulation on ordinary people, who have done nothing wrong.
“We would like to thank each of the film’s participants for coming forward to share their stories in their own words.”
