Myeloma is the second most common form of blood cancer and current affects around 5,000 people each year. Whilst treatable, myeloma is not yet curable.
The intended use of the donation is to purchase additional summer event furniture, printing costs for publicity materials and other necessities for the support group to carry on their exceptional work.
David Simister, Group Leader at the Myeloma Support Group, said: “We are dedicated to aiding those affected by myeloma and raising awareness of the disease, working closely with healthcare professionals in our local area.
“This donation from David Wilson Homes will be going towards funding for our group’s social activities, the creation of our publicity materials and helping to cope with mobility issues some may face. These events offer an invaluable boost to morale and mental health.”
The final point is particularly poignant as many sufferers of myeloma face extensive and numerous stays in the hospital to help treat symptoms. Social gatherings and fundraisers are a great way to keep members of the group active and positive.
These gatherings have been particularly difficult to organise during the pandemic as the majority of the group are extremely clinically vulnerable.
“Most of our members are immuo-defficient so have been shielding for long periods, face to face meet ups have only recently restarted. Due to COVID-19 our promotional material had to be replaced in the hospitals, so being able to produce new publications is fantastic.
“Support from local businesses and organisations is vital to continuing our work, and so we are extremely grateful to David Wilson Homes for their donation.”
The West Lancashire and Merseyside Myeloma Support Group meets once a month and represents an opportunity to meet patients, family members and carers.
Robert Holbrook, Managing Director of David Wilson Homes North West, said: “As a leading developer it is really important that we support the community in the areas in which we build.
“The Myeloma Support Group is doing vital work in supporting sufferers across West Lancashire and Merseyside, and we are happy to support them with the development of their organisation. We wish them the best of luck, and in difficult times like these we’re encouraging more people to support their local community.”
