MyTutor raises £15m to fill the gaps in the education system

MyTutor, the UK’s most trusted tutoring platform and the largest provider of in-school tuition in last year’s Government-backed National Tuition Programme, has just announced a raise of £15m in a round led by SEEK Investments and supported by existing investors including Mobeus Equity Partners.

The leading online tutor’s mission is to provide life changing tuition for all, regardless of background, and is unique in its offering by supporting both disadvantaged students through its schools programme and private tuition partnering directly with parents. With their base of 20,000 tutors they’ve supported over 1,000 Secondary Schools, hundreds of thousands of parents, and delivered over 2 million lessons. They have also just been announced as a provider for the National Tuition Programme for the second year running after supporting 30,000 students with catch up learning in the last academic year .

MyTutor is unique in that all its tutors are carefully-vetted subject experts from the UK’s top universities. bBeing close in age to their students, the tutors not only provide academic support, but also build confidence and provide mentorship too. 96% of MyTutor parents and 85% of school leaders said that tutoring not only helped their children get better grades, but helped them feel more confident too.

This funding will support MyTutor to build out their platform to enable tutors to deliver even more effective and engaging lessons, further develop their group tuition product, and expand internationally.

This is SEEK Investment’s first investment since they announced the launch of a new A$1.2bn growth fund. They bring extensive experience investing in education companies including Future Learn in partnership with Open University, Go1 who announced their latest $200m funding round in July, and Coursera who went public in March of this year.

While tutoring has traditionally been of mixed quality and the preserve of the wealthy, MyTutor’s co-founder and CEO, Bertie Hubbard, sees it becoming more mainstream and robust in the years to come.

“We see tutoring as a core part of every child’s education, not as a quick stop gap to deal with an immediate learning problem. It works best alongside their school education – filling any gaps in their foundations, building confidence, and unlocking their full potential.”

SEEK aims to make a positive impact on a global scale, and so they are equally aligned to a vision of more widely accessible high impact tutoring. “A positive education experience for everyone is of critical importance. The pandemic has only highlighted the need for an online service that helps fill the gaps in today’s education system by delivering personalised support tailored to the individual. We are excited to support MyTutor as they look to bring life quality tuition to a wider audience.” commented SEEK co-founder Andrew Bassat.
