Millennial homeowners spend thousands on home décor each year, survey reveals

Millennial homeowners aged 25-34 are spending more on home décor products, such as wallpaper, carpets and furniture, each year than any other demographic, a new survey finds.

The DIY Fulfilment Survey, conducted by Blinds Direct, looks at the nation’s attitude towards common DIY tasks and our home décor habits, including how much we spend on products each year, and who has seen the biggest improvement in their updated living space.

The survey found that homeowners aged 25-34 spend more on décor each year than any other age group, clocking in at an average expenditure of £1,140 each year.

In comparison, those aged 18-24 are spending around £812, while those aged 35-44 are splashing out less at £658. Those aged 64 and over account for the lowest annual spend.

The survey also found that the most deterring factor for homeowners who are considering taking on a DIY task is the cost of materials (50%), while more than half of respondents (56%) deem cost to be the most important factor when buying home furnishings.

For millennials, the biggest deterrent when it comes to DIY came out as concerns around the quality of the end result (42%), suggesting homeowners in that age group would prefer to spend more on a product rather than try a task themselves.

Other key findings from the survey included that a third of those aged 25-34 (31%) consider being happy with their home décor as key to maintaining a positive mood, while 30% of homeowners are happier with their living space now, compared to a year ago.

Darren Green, Managing Director at Blinds Direct, commented, “It’s interesting to see how one person’s expenditure on home décor indicates a significant sum spent across the nation, as well as what the average person’s concerns are when it comes to purchasing a décor product.

“Other heartening outcomes from the survey include that we’re becoming increasingly confident in taking on the challenge of keeping our homes beautiful ourselves. Whether it’s fitting a wooden blind, painting a wall or building a new desk, we are becoming increasingly confident in our own abilities and the positive effect it has on our happiness reinforces the importance of doing things independently.”

As well as looking at cost and décor priorities, the survey reveals which rooms we update most, and which DIY tasks result in the greatest sense of achievement when completed.
