KEIR STARMER IS PUSHING A ‘TERRIBLE’ DEAL ON CHAGOS ISLANDS, SAYS ROBERT JENRICK

SHADOW Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick has claimed that Keir Starmer is putting his reputation before the interests of the country by pushing ahead with a “terrible deal” on the Chagos Islands.
He also said that the Justice Secretary’s proposal to chemically castrate sex offenders was a deliberate attempt to distract attention from the government’s plans to cut prison sentences.
Reacting to the High Court injunction banning the signing of the Chagos deal, he told GB News: “Let’s hope that this is ultimately successful, because this is an absolutely disgraceful sellout where Keir Starmer is looking to give away sovereign British territory to an ally of China and pay billions of pounds for the privilege.
“Let’s hope that this succeeds. All power to the elbow of the Great British PAC and the individuals who brought forward this legal challenge.”
Asked why the government wants to sign a deal, he said: “The only explanation I can find for this is Keir Starmer’s view of international law, where he thinks that his reputation on the gilded circuit of lawyers and courts is more important than the interests of the British people, because this is a very, very bad deal.
“We’re giving away our own territory. We are losing control over territory on which there is an incredibly important base that we and our key ally, the United States, make use of, and we’re paying billions of pounds for decades and decades for the privilege of doing so. It’s a terrible deal.
“It should be stopped, but Keir Starmer has proceeded with it, because at the end of the day, he’s a human rights lawyer who always puts international law above the interest of the British public.”
On the Justice Secretary’s plan to chemically castrate sex offenders, he said: “I would support it, but I don’t believe for one minute that Shabana Mahmood and certainly not Keir Starmer are ever going to support this proposal.
“They’ve just briefed this to the press this morning to cover up the fact that they’re announcing immensely unpopular proposals to slash sentences.
“What they’re announcing today is that they’re going to draw an end to sentences of 12 months or less, and that means that burglars, thieves, domestic abusers, thugs who assault people, are not going to go to jail, and instead, are going to get a tag, a plastic tag, or be told that they can’t go to a football match.
“That’s a complete joke. It’s a slap in the face to victims and even those who do go to jail for serious offences like arson or ABH, are going to have their sentence cut by 50%. In fact, it’s even worse than that.
“If they plead guilty, they might only serve 22% of their sentence. This is a license for criminals to be out on our streets, terrorising communities of impunity. It is a get out of jail free card for criminals.”
Asked about immigration, he said: “On the small boats crisis, what Kemi Badenoch has said is that we are going to remove the human rights laws like the Human Rights Act, so that we can take more robust action and on legal migration, we’re saying that we are going to have a legally binding cap set by Parliament behind me make it the law of the land, so finally, the public can know with confidence that when politicians make promises, they’re actually going to deliver on them.
“That’s what’s so important. I resigned from Cabinet because I felt so strongly about this issue. I’m sick of politicians lying to the public about immigration.
“The public want action now, and that means changing our human rights laws so you can get rid of the illegal migrants, and it means getting immigration down to the tens of thousands or lower, to a sustainable level, and giving the country breathing space after this incredible period of mass migration in which there’s been so much pressure on housing, on public services, workers’ wages have been undercut and our country has been left less united.”
