David Wilson Homes recently donated gardening sets and seeds to The Firs Day Nursery in Stapenhill to encourage its children to discover the benefits of gardening.

To help brighten up the nursery’s planting area, children at the nursery were gifted two children’s gardening sets, containing items such as trowels, spades and gardening forks, and packets of calendula and cornflower seeds so the children can have fun planting them together and watching them grow.

Following interruptions in their early years development due to the pandemic, the donation from David Wilson Homes is designed to ensure the children can make new memories together now restrictions have eased.

Jenny Cole, Manager at The Firs Day Nursery, said: “The children will benefit greatly from this donation as it’s a great opportunity to spend more time outside. We can’t wait to see the calendula and cornflower blossom and enjoy many more outdoor experiences.”

As noted by House and Garden, one of the gardening related trends is the growing popularity of micro-gardens which involves people creating their own personal gardens in the tiniest of spaces, from balconies and side returns to windowsills.

The demand for gardening had grown rapidly during the UK’s first lockdown as 322 million more plants had been bought in 2020 compared with 2019, according to Gardens Illustrated.

Rachael Harrison, Sales Director at David Wilson Homes East Midlands, said: “We hope the children enjoy using their gardening kits and planting seeds at the nursery to bring colour to their garden.

“We’re thrilled to be able to provide these items for The Firs Day Nursery and we’ll look forward to hearing how their seeds have grown over the coming months.”

The Firs Day Nursery is located close to David Wilson Homes’ Drakelow Park development, located on Walton Road in Drakelow, which had its final homes recently reserved.
