DESSERTS were the takeaway food trend of the summer, according to new national research.

UK takeaway fans ordered almost twice as many desserts online during this summer as they did the previous year, the research by Foodhub, one of the UK’s leading food ordering platforms, has revealed.

The Foodhub data shows that desserts overtook the usual fast-food favorites of pizza, kebabs and curry in the takeaway popularity stakes during summer 2021, with a record number of dessert orders during 2021’s summer months.

Analysts from Foodhub researched UK orders placed via their app and website during the summer months to determine the nation’s most popular takeaway of choice, with almost one in 10 Foodhub customers (8%) heading to the platform to order a dessert, proving more popular than almost all the usual iconic takeaway dishes.

Last year’s August bank holiday saw a surge in Doner kebabs, with Foodhub predicting a nationwide shortage. But desserts have triumphed this year as Brits battled to get their hands on a sweet treat.

The only food staple to trump the national craving for sweet treats was the traditional and evergreen burger. Whether chicken, beef or vegetarian, burgers were still THE takeaway meal that is regularly enjoyed inside and outside of the home.

But dessert takeaway orders were the story of the summer – with the UK recording almost double the number of dessert orders compared to the same period of 2020.

The Foodhub research reveals that the most popular dessert among Brits this summer was ice cream. Next was doughnuts, quickly followed by cake, milkshakes and crepes.

Ardian Mula, Foodhub CEO, said: “It’s encouraging to see how much desserts grew in popularity over this summer. At Foodhub we have continuously added to our dessert offering, as we’ve seen an obvious increase in dessert takeaway orders since lockdown.

“Desserts have become a real customer craze over recent months and our data shows it doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon, even though summer is almost over, and people are getting ready to hunker down for autumn. It really is the takeaway food story of the year so far.

“We offer a wide range of sweet dishes and desserts, so whether you’re a waffle lover, cake fan or you prefer the cold as ice ice-cream – we cater for all.”

Foodhub currently has over 20,000 restaurant and takeaway partners in the UK and is the only major takeaway app not to charge commission on each order. To find out how takeaways ordered via Foodhub are on average 15% cheaper than other providers, visit www.foodhub.co.uk
