Counterfeit car tech is cause for concern

Drivers are being warned of the dangers of buying low price knock off parking cameras from budget websites.

Motoring experts at AbsoluteReg.co.uk say that buying car tech and accessories from non-reputable sources could land motorists in hot water.

Generally, drivers are warned against solely relying on parking cameras, as they can provide a false sense of security.

While they may be helpful in providing visibility directly behind the car, they can lead to more accidents if drivers rely heavily on them, especially if the perspective is skewed.

However, some counterfeit cameras being sold on budget sites are providing a completely inaccurate perspective and false distance perception, causing drivers to park either too far or too close to other vehicles and potential hazards.

Reliance on knock-off car tech that could be faulty or inaccurate is a serious danger to road users.

This is why drivers are being urged not to be seduced by low prices, and instead buy their gadgets and accessories from reputable sources.

Jake Smith, director of Absolute Reg, said: “We have seen a rise in the number of online videos from road users showing the skewed perspective of their cheap parking cameras.

“These cheap parking cameras are producing inaccurate views of behind the car, with wildly inaccurate depth perception.

“This could very easily lead a driver into making a mistake and causing damage to their vehicle or someone else’s.

“We are strongly urging all drivers to only buy parking cameras from reputable sources, rather than being enticed by low prices. The fact still remains that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

“We urge all motorists, whether they have cheaper knock off parking cameras or ones that were already fitted in their car when purchasing, to avoid relying solely on them. Instead, utilise your rearview and side mirrors to park safely.”
