CHARITY STARTS AT HOME: WEST MIDLANDS DEVELOPER RAISES OVER £170,000 FOR BIRMINGHAM CANCER CHARITY
A cancer charity based in Birmingham has received a donation of over £170,000 from West Midlands homebuilder David Wilson Homes.
Help Harry Help Others (HHHO) is a West Midlands charity that offers free physical and emotional support to cancer patients, their family and friends, as well as raising funds to help research projects find a cure for brain tumours.
David Wilson Homes’ Mercia division chose HHHO as its Charity of the Year in 2017, and team members from all sectors have been working hard each year to raise money. The division has currently raised £170,165.03 for the charity.
The homebuilder has been a long time supporter of HHHO, hosting a number of fundraising events over the years. These include a 24 hour cycling challenge, where volunteers from across the division took to a stationary bike to ride over 550 miles, a charity boxing match, as well as other fun days, golf days, and charity dinners.
Georgie Moseley, Harry’s mum and Founder of Help Harry Help Others, said: “Our tiny charity is quite simply overwhelmed by the ongoing support, commitment and dedication of our friends at David Wilson Homes. Since that very first initial presentation to the team about HHHO, and all the services we offer, they have grasped every opportunity to do all they can to help, even through tough times like the pandemic.
“It’s a privilege and honour to work with their team and also get involved and support their many events – even when I have had to perform the dance on stage from Dirty Dancing and run on a treadmill in their foyer.
“I consider them to be an extension of our tiny team, who undoubtedly have had an impact on all we have achieved over recent years. We’d like to say a huge thank you to David Wilson Homes for making a difference every single day to those we support that are affected by cancer.”
Help Harry Help Others began in 2009 when Harry Moseley, an 11 year old boy with an inoperable brain tumour from Sheldon, started making bracelets to raise money for charity. His bracelets were worn by celebrities such as Harry Styles and Gary Lineker, and his fundraising efforts raised more than £750,000.
Within the space of just over two years, Harry had organised and attended nearly 100 events to raise money for and awareness of brain cancer. He touched the hearts of the nation with his efforts and helped change the lives of everyone he met.
Despite defying all odds, Harry passed away in 2011, and Harry’s mum was determined that his legacy should continue, with the official launch of HHHO the same year. Since then, they have launched a School Social Enterprise that encourages other children to make bracelets for charity, and launched their Drop in Cancer Support Centre for families, the first of its kind in Birmingham.
Dominic Harman, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes Mercia, said: “We are delighted that we could raise over £170,000 and hope that we can continue to increase this total.
“Well done to all our volunteers who worked so hard in their fundraising efforts, and to all those that have donated. Help Harry Help Others is an inspirational local charity and we hope that the money we raise for them this year can go towards this very important cause.”
