BERKSHIRE HOMEBUILDER HELPS THERAPY CENTRE TO DELIVER 125 EXERCISE SESSIONS
Hungerford-based David Wilson Homes Southern has made a £1,000 donation to a therapy centre in Berkshire, as a contribution towards the charity’s efforts in the rehabilitation of disabled members of the community.
The donation came as part of the Barratt Developments Plc Charitable Foundation, which is designed to support national and local charities, large and small, across the UK to leave a legacy in the communities in which the housebuilder operates.
West Berkshire Therapy Centre is a unique facility helping disabled adults to keep more mobile and independent. Clients are exercised by power-assisted equipment that provides gentle, repetitive movements; easing stiff and reluctant muscles and joints to help get them working better together.
Assisting people with disabilities in the area, the Centre is a specialised gym where good quality services can be provided to support the health and well-being needs of the local community.
John Holt, Trustee at West Berkshire Therapy Centre, said: “This is the second time that David Wilson Homes has gifted us funds. It’s a great feeling when a commercial organisation recognises the difference our charity is making, and it means that the company’s employees have really noticed the importance of what we do and how it helps local people in real need.
“The grant from the homebuilder has helped us to provide 125 exercise sessions to local people in hardship. Typically, after 10 sessions, most clients can walk 10% further or climb stairs safely, and their outlook and social involvement is also up by 15%, making a huge difference to help clients live a better and more fulfilled life.
“We are all immensely grateful to David Wilson Homes for thinking about social responsibilities, and for thinking about us as part of that. We love making a difference and we greatly appreciate the support.”
A group of trained physiotherapists is available at the Centre to assess each patient on an individual basis, with a number of voluntary helpers present all the time.
Exercise is proven to help many conditions such as strokes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s and arthritis. With specialist power assisted equipment, West Berkshire Therapy Centre allows for exercise in a safe, relaxed, accessible environment.
All of the machines in the Centre are bespoke and the software can be programmed to monitor the client’s performance.
Campbell Gregg, Managing Director at David Wilson Homes Southern, said: “Having visited West Berkshire Therapy Centre in the past, our colleagues know the importance of its work and we’re delighted to provide further support with another £1,000 donation.
“The admirable work of the charity benefits a large number of people with disabilities and we’re pleased to be able to offer our help towards a fantastic cause.”
The Centre relies heavily on donations both from sponsors and the clients themselves, to be able to provide specialised therapy services to those in the local community who would otherwise not be able to access them, whether for financial or physical reasons.
