Bah Humbug! A third of Brits say they’re not excited for Christmas 2020, and one in ten won’t bother putting up a tree
Christmas this year is certainly going to be different than the last, and new research reveals that 33% of Brits aren’t excited at all for the festivities, 31% haven’t undertaken any preparations and 12% won’t put up a tree.
The research, conducted by regulated property buyers, Good Move, reveals how the nation’s attitudes towards Christmas are looking this year amidst the uncertainty surrounding the festive period.
The majority of Brits surveyed (39%) said they are excited for Christmas, but not as much as previous years, understandable considering the circumstances!
Over a third (33%) claimed they’re not excited at all for Christmas this year, while just 28% said they’re really excited for the festivities.
Although Christmas this year is still uncertain, many Brits have already started their festive preparations. The top five preparations Brits have already undertaken, are:
Started my shopping (44%)
Planned the Christmas day menu (13%)
Finished my shopping (11%)
Invited friends/family for Christmas (8%)
Planned games/activities for Christmas Day (8%)
Nearly half (44%) of those surveyed have started their Christmas shopping already, while 11% have really got ahead of the game and finished theirs! What’s more, 13% have planned what food they’ll be having Christmas Day, 8% have invited over friends and family and a further 8% have planned their games and activities for the big day.
Despite this, 31% of Brits said they haven’t done any planning for Christmas this year.
So, when is the nation planning to put up their tree? While 5% already have theirs up, a further 18% plan to put their tree up before December, and the majority (80%) claim it’ll be up by 18th December, which is just a week before the big day.
Interestingly, 12% of those surveyed say they won’t bother putting up a Christmas tree this year, and 8% aren’t giving themselves much time at all, and will be putting up their tree after December 18th.
Understandably, this year has been difficult and not many people are looking forward to the festive season approaching, and the older generation are more guilty of this than their younger counterparts.
Half (50%) of respondents aged 55-64 and 56% of over 65s said they’re not at all excited for Christmas this year, but just 22% of those aged 18-24 and 16% of 25-34 year old’s agreed.
And when it comes to decorating their home, 18% of 55-64-year olds and 22% of over 65s said they wouldn’t be putting up a Christmas tree this year, compared to just 12% of 18-24s, and 7% of 25-34s.
To conclude, Nima Ghasri, Director at Good Move, says: “It’s hard to believe that Christmas is just around the corner, and with all that’s happened this year and the uncertainty of what we can and can’t do this festive season, it’s understandable that 33% of Brits said they aren’t at all excited for Christmas this year, and 39% aren’t as excited as they have been in previous years.
“Our research shows that many Brits are still feeling festive though, with preparations for the big day underway. Christmas is something we can look forward to at the end of the year, and hopefully we can spend this time with our friends and family and really make the most of it after a difficult year.”
