On 6th January 2022, the 1921 Census of England and Wales is released which will provide an insight into what life was like following World War One.
Award winning historian, genealogist and census expert, Dr Michala Hulme from the University of Birmingham is available for interviews to decipher the 1921 census and provide commentary on the key findings.
On the launch of the 1921 Census Michala Hulme says: “I am really excited about this census. As a genealogist, we have to wait ten years for a census to be released and because the 1931 census was destroyed and there was no census in 1941, this census has added importance. It will be interesting to see if any family members got divorced, as divorce was still an expensive and relatively difficult process. I am also looking forward to seeing where people worked, especially women – we know that most women returned to their former roles following WWI, however, it will be fascinating to see who didn’t and who stayed in employment.”
Since 1841, the census has been taken every ten years and in that time the information it provides us with has changed. Alongside the usual, name, age, sex, address, occupation, place of birth and nationality, this census will provide us with an address where people worked and it also recognises divorce and orphaned children.
Dr Michala Hulme is an expert and presenter on ITV’s genealogy show DNA Journey, she was also the historian on BBC Heir Hunters and Who Do You Think You Are?
