The challenges in funding the fight against climate change
Over the past few weeks, several announcements have been made on the funding secured by Rolls-Royce for their Small Modular Reactor (SMR) business, which includes £210 million of government funding and over £250 million from private sources. It has also been announced today the Qatar is set to invest £100 million in the venture which is designed to help the UK reach net-zero with small nuclear reactors modelled on Rolls-Royce’s previous work on nuclear submarines.
Funding these kind of projects, however, is no easy feat, and many will say that the work is only now beginning to make SMRs a reality in the UK and abroad. This is something that founder of RWT Growth, Reece Tomlinson, knows well, having previously worked closely with one of the leading SMR companies in North America, StarCore Nuclear Inc.
RWT Growth has been instrumental in assisting StarCore procure capital, develop its corporate strategy and financial management. StarCore with RWT help is building its first SMR operations in Pinawa, Manitoba, Canada. This will be the first commercial SMR reactor in North America operating online, and supplying power to the local community. RWT has been critical to StarCore’s capital strategy and assisted in discussions with the Canadian government. Reece Tomlinson, the founder of RWT Growth, has become an integral part of the StarCore leadership team.
